About Pharmacy Advising

About the Pharmacy Advising Center

The Pharmacy Advising Center provides holistic advising, mentorship, support and other services to Pre-Professional, Professional (Pharm.D.) students, faculty, and staff in the School of Pharmacy. The Center's staff represent the Dean of the School of Pharmacy for a variety of undergraduate and professional academic services. Our advisors frequently meet with:

  • Students who have questions about general education, professional electives, curricular tracks, dual degrees, and other degree requirements.
  • Students in need of holistic support and connection to resources at UConn.
  • Students who wish to become involved in research in the School of Pharmacy.
  • Students who have questions about application to the Professional (Pharm.D.) Program in Pharmacy
  • Students who have questions or concerns related to transfer and campus changes.
  • Students from other UConn schools and colleges who are considering changing their major to the Pre-Professional Program in Pharmacy or who wish to apply into the Professional (Pharm.D.) Program in Pharmacy from another UConn major.
  • Students who need the Pharmacy Dean's signature or who need verification documents for licenses and applications in pharmacy.

We encourage students to attend a drop-in for quick questions or to schedule an appointment with one of our advisors to discuss more complex concerns.

Mission & Advising Philosophy

The Pharmacy Advising Center's mission is to serve and support the needs of both the students in the Pre-Professional and Professional (Pharm.D.) Program in Pharmacy, and any students at UConn and beyond who have an interest in pharmacy at UConn. Our work philosophy is grounded in a holistic advising model that centers student empowerment, collaborative mentorship, and recognizes students as full and complex human beings.

Our holistic advising model involves:

  • Providing individualized and tailored support for students that considers
    • Who the student is beyond the academic sphere
    • Where a student is in their development
    • What they are currently experiencing in their lives
    • What their goals and aspirations are
  • Connecting students to resources, networks and mentorship
  • Translating and teaching the "hidden curriculum"
  • A commitment to social justice

Regional Campus Advising

Students in the Pre-Professional Program in Pharmacy may be at a regional campus. All regional campus students are assigned an advisor by the campus Director of Student Services. Students should feel free to contact their assigned regional campus advisor, the appropriate advising office below, or the Pharmacy Advising Center staff on the Storrs campus with any questions or concerns. Pharmacy Advising Center staff regularly have virtual or phone appointments with regional campus students.

Advisor & Advisee Responsibilities

"Good advising may be the single most underestimated characteristic of a successful college experience." (Light, 2004)

Advising is an integral part of UConn's educational mission. A successful and productive advising relationship involves the collaboration of both advisor and student, and promotes the engagement of the student not only within the classroom, but in co-curricular opportunities to ensure their full development.

We encourage all students to review the Advisor/Advisee Responsibilities page on the University Undergraduate Advising website.
