Student Organizations & School Committees

The School of Pharmacy officially recognizes pharmacy student organizations that are either student chapters affiliated with a professional pharmacy-related organization; pharmacy-related fraternities or sororities; pharmacy-related honor or professional societies; pharmacy-related research organizations; or meet a unique need of the students as approved by the Office of the Associate Dean. Each pharmacy student organization is advised by a faculty member. Interested students may be appointed to serve or join School of Pharmacy committees. Appointed roles need to applied to via the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs.

Organizations Open to Pre-Professional & Professional Students

The School of Pharmacy enthusiastically welcomes the participation of students in the Pre-Professional Program in Pharmacy in pharmacy student organizations. Multiple organizations are available for Pre-Professional students to join as early as their first semester.

Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity – Nu Chapter

Alpha Zeta Omega is a pharmaceutical fraternity composed of pharmacists and pharmacy students.  The objectives of the organization are: to promote the profession of pharmacy; to develop high standards of scholarship; to inculcate a spirit of fellowship amongst its members; to bring together a body of men and women who, by the diligent maintenance of ethical ideals and faithful service, have proven a credit to their chosen profession; to honor achievement in others; to commend all worthy deeds; to build within the fraternity a triangle composed of three supporting sides which are peace, friendship, and brotherly love.

Industry Pharmacists Organization [IPhO] University of Connecticut Student Chapter

IPhO is an international, nonprofit organization that serves as the global forum for therapeutic innovation and regulatory science. As part of this, members will be provided with the experience and tools necessary to expand their personal career development. Members will also be provided with opportunities to collaborate and network with other students and professionals to foster medical innovation and exchange information to help improve public health.

For interested students, we also provide opportunities for members to present articles/research in preparation for more traditional journal club settings and beyond. No Friend Left nALoxONEaims to teach the public the importance of Naloxone in case of an overdose. Many are not aware of how accessible a Naloxone is to patients on opioids and the roles pharmacists play in dispensing them. Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare provider so we play a huge role in patient counseling.

The Pharmacy Student Government [PSG] is a student run “umbrella” organization that works to enhance communication between students, faculty, administration, University of Connecticut schools with health-related interests, and other schools of pharmacy. Pharmacy Student Government lobbies for the interests of the students and organizes activities that are social, professional and/or philanthropic in nature. Pharmacy Student Government is comprised of four representatives from each professional program class and up to two representatives appointed from each pharmacy student organization recognized by the Office of Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs. Representatives of the P2, P3 and P4 classes are elected in the first full week in April. The P1 class representatives are elected during the third full week of classes in September. The Dean and Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs serve as ex-officio members of the body.

Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity – Alpha Lambda Chapter

Students for Accurate Vaccine Information [SAVI]

School of Pharmacy Contact: 

Students for Accurate Vaccine Information [SAVI] is an organization of inter-professional health students with the aim of supporting the spread of factual, current, and accessible vaccine information through community outreach and education as well as advocating for public health measures and legislation that strengthen robust and equitable vaccine distribution practices. With the proliferation of vaccine misinformation and the increasing politicization of public health practices, there has never been a greater need to promote trust in science, healthcare, and evidence based vaccination practices. Through activities such as literature design and distribution, guest speakers, legislative advocacy, and public health campaigns, SAVI hopes to develop and strengthen community partnerships, expand our knowledge of vaccination best practices, and participate in the medical, ethical, and legal discourse surrounding vaccinations.

Student College of Clinical Pharmacists [SCCP]

SCCP is the student chapter of the national organization, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. Our organization promotes excellence in patient care, research, and education through our community outreach programs such as flu clinics and healthcare-focused presentations in the community. We also provide information to students about careers and opportunities within the field of clinical pharmacy.

Topic Discussion Club (TDC) provides students with the opportunity to participate in topic discussions, which are a key component of pharmacy student rotations. Topic discussions are led by students who prepare a selected topic that they present to a healthcare professional/preceptor who chimes in with clinical pearls.

Each topic discussion allows students to gain experience in a learner-friendly environment where they can strengthen clinical knowledge, learn about different specialties, and prepare for professional rotations.

Certain organizations in the School of Pharmacy are only open to Professional (Pharm.D.) Program students, whether because of the nature of the organization or the organization by-laws.

School of Pharmacy Debate Club

The purpose of Pharmacy Debate Club is to encourage students in the pharmacy school to learn different perspectives on ethical and medical issues that affect communities worldwide. Students will also learn how to effectively present their arguments on these issues in a Lincoln Douglas debate format.

The SEA program is led by highly motivated students and faculty who are interested in providing additional resources to enrich the learning experience for the school of pharmacy student body. Resources are easily accessible through the HuskyCT website under “Pharmacy Academic Resources” and can be viewed by any student or faculty member. SEA also offers review sessions and 1-on-1 tutoring based on student needs.

Diversity Committee

Diversity Committee supports and advocates for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, class, age, or other identifying characteristics. The committee aims to increase diversity within the School of Pharmacy, foster belonging ,and provide information about the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in health care practice. The committee focuses on the needs of underrepresented groups within the School of Pharmacy and our community. Students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Pre-professional students are encouraged to participate.

Wellness Committee

Wellness Committee is charged with enhancing wellness in the School of Pharmacy. The committee is composed of faculty, staff, and students from the pre-professional years and each of the professional years and focuses on the below three areas:

Mental/Emotional Wellness: This subgroup coordinates and organizes events and initiatives that focus on the mental and emotional well-being of students, faculty, and staff.

Physical Wellness: This subgroup coordinates and organizes events and initiatives that focus on the physical well-being of students, faculty, and staff.

Holistic Wellness: This subgroup coordinates and organizes events and initiatives that focus on the other needs and interests of the student body, faculty, and staff regarding wellness. It will touch upon any and/or all of the following areas of wellness, including social, spiritual, occupational, environmental, and financial wellness, among others.

School of Pharmacy Committees Open to Professional Students

Certain committees in the School of Pharmacy are only open to Professional (Pharm.D.) Program students, due to the nature of the committees.

Assessment Committee

This committee consists of faculty and staff members and a student representative to discuss methods, analysis, and results of a wide variety of assessment measures. Activities assessed within the School of Pharmacy include advising, curriculum, experiential rotations, student services, employment opportunities, teaching, and courses. This committee meets once a month. The representative must maintain good academic standing to remain on the committee; otherwise, an alternate representative must be designated.

Curriculum and Curricular Assessment Committee

This committee consists of faculty members and student representatives from each of the professional years. Student members participate in discussion of curricular matters and vote collectively for their classes. Each class representative is required to maintain communication with their respective classes and to periodically inform and receive feedback from their class on curricular matters. Discretion is required and representatives are to act accordingly. The Curriculum and Curricular Assessment Committee meets once monthly with additional meetings as required. Class schedules and teaching schedules are considered when scheduling meetings. Generally, the term of office is from the date of selection until graduation. The representative must maintain good academic standing to remain on the committee; otherwise, an alternate representative must be designated.

Dean’s Student Liaison Committee (DSLC)

This committee consists of Professional (Pharm.D.) students and the Dean of the School of Pharmacy. This committee was formed to keep the Dean and Professional (Pharm.D.) students aware of current events within the School of Pharmacy, developing solutions for unexpected or difficult events that may arise during the semester, and working together to achieve common goals. The committee is comprised of six students, two each from the P1, P2, and P3 years.

Information/Technology & Library Committee

This committee consists of faculty and staff members and a student representative to discuss current policies regarding laptop use, personal response devices (clickers), smart boards, etc., as well as policies regarding library use, resources, and accessibility. The committee meets once a month. The representative must maintain good academic standing to remain on the committee; otherwise, an alternate representative must be designated.

Pharmacy Alumni Association Student Representative

Selection for the Pharmacy Alumni Association Board of Directors is made by the Office of the Dean.

Professionalism Committee

This committee is charged with developing and implementing programs to foster professionalism. The committee is composed of faculty, staff, alumni, and students from each of the professional years; it generally meets once a month. The representative must maintain good academic standing to remain on the committee; otherwise, an alternate representative must be designated.
